Genesis 26: Isaac's Faith and Famine

Pastor Bob Thibodeau dives into Genesis chapter 26, where he highlights that when God makes a promise, it will definitely come to pass. He talks about Isaac, who faces a famine but receives a direct word from God to stay put and trust in His blessings. Isaac's journey shows that even in tough times, sticking to God's plan leads to abundance, like when he sowed during a drought and got a hundredfold return. The episode emphasizes the importance of faith and obedience, showcasing how God’s blessings follow those who trust Him. As Pastor Bob wraps things up, he encourages listeners to remember that they are also heirs to these blessings, just like Isaac.

Speaker A:

Hello everyone, everywhere.

Speaker A:

Pastor Bob Thibodeau here.

Speaker A:

Welcome to your 15 minute daily Bible walk.

Speaker A:

We're so blessed that you're joining us each and every day as we gather around the word of God.

Speaker A:

Just study this verse by verse.

Speaker A:

Praise God.

Speaker A:

We're going through the entire Bible.

Speaker A:

Hallelujah.

Speaker A:

One verse at a time.

Speaker A:

Just letting the word minister to us.

Speaker A:

Amen.

Speaker A:

So let's go into today's study.

Speaker A:

We're beginning now in Genesis, chapter 26.

Speaker A:

And there was a famine in the land besides the first famine.

Speaker A:

That was in the days of Abraham.

Speaker A:

And Isaac went to Abimelech, King of the Philistines, unto Gerar.

Speaker A:

And the Lord appeared unto him and said, do not go down to Egypt.

Speaker A:

Dwell in the land which I'll tell you about.

Speaker A:

Live in this land and I will be with you.

Speaker A:

I will bless you for unto you and unto your seed.

Speaker A:

I will give all these countries.

Speaker A:

And I will perform the oath which I swore unto Abraham, your father.

Speaker A:

And I will make your seed to multiply as the stars of heaven.

Speaker A:

And I'll give unto your seed all these countries.

Speaker A:

And in your seed, all the nations of the earth shall be blessed.

Speaker A:

Because Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my charge, My commandments, my statutes and my laws.

Speaker A:

Now remember, Isaac was almost sacrificed by Abraham, but he understood the promises of God.

Speaker A:

He understood, you know, he was brought up understanding the blessing, that when God said it, he meant it.

Speaker A:

And there is no way God could violate his word.

Speaker A:

That's what allowed him to get on that altar and allow himself sacrifice me, if that's what it takes to be blessed.

Speaker A:

Because I know that the promise was all these descendants are going to come through Isaac.

Speaker A:

He said, I know God's going to bless me.

Speaker A:

They just somehow they just knew God would honor his word and had to raise Isaac up if need be.

Speaker A:

And.

Speaker A:

And we read all that a few weeks back.

Speaker A:

The point I'm trying to get to today is when God promises it, it will come to pass.

Speaker A:

You can rest upon that.

Speaker A:

You can be sure on that.

Speaker A:

You can stake your life on that.

Speaker A:

Isaac did.

Speaker A:

Amen.

Speaker A:

And now here, you know there's another famine in the land.

Speaker A:

And he's thinking, you know, where are we going to go to survive this?

Speaker A:

And God appears to us as just stay right here.

Speaker A:

I'll bless you right here.

Speaker A:

You don't have to go down into Egypt.

Speaker A:

Stay right here.

Speaker A:

And he gives him that promise.

Speaker A:

He's heard that promise before.

Speaker A:

That's the one that was given to Abraham, that through Isaac, all these blessings will come.

Speaker A:

And Now God's given it directly to him.

Speaker A:

Amen.

Speaker A:

He's speaking it to him.

Speaker A:

So he's like, we're good.

Speaker A:

I'll stay right here.

Speaker A:

And that's what we'll take up.

Speaker A:

Now, in verse number six, Isaac dwelt in Grer.

Speaker A:

He just stayed right there, verse 7.

Speaker A:

And the men of that place asked him about his wife.

Speaker A:

Now remember, Rebecca's beautiful here, right?

Speaker A:

And he says, oh, she's my sister.

Speaker A:

For he feared to say, she's my wife, lest the men of the place would kill him for Rebecca because she was fair to look at.

Speaker A:

She was a beautiful woman, right?

Speaker A:

So where did he get that idea for that little white lie?

Speaker A:

Where did he hear that one before dad, right?

Speaker A:

And they say, hey, you know, this would.

Speaker A:

You know, I had to do that because, you know, your mom, she was.

Speaker A:

She was a hottie.

Speaker A:

And the guys were looking at her and I was like, they're gonna kill me for her.

Speaker A:

Just, you know, just say that you're my sister.

Speaker A:

That's what he told Rebecca to say too.

Speaker A:

All right?

Speaker A:

It came to pass, verse eight, when he'd been there a long time, that Abimelech, king of the Philistines, looked out the window one day and saw to look and saw.

Speaker A:

Isaac was sporting with Rebecca, his wife.

Speaker A:

That word, sporting, let's just put it in modern vernacular here.

Speaker A:

They were making out, okay?

Speaker A:

He saw her.

Speaker A:

He saw them making out.

Speaker A:

Isaac was making out with his wife.

Speaker A:

And that caught my attention, like brothers and sisters don't do that.

Speaker A:

This has to be his wife.

Speaker A:

So he called Isaac and said, behold of a surety, she is your wife.

Speaker A:

How could you tell me she's your sister?

Speaker A:

And Isaac said to him, because I said, lest I die for her.

Speaker A:

Now, that sounds kind of flippant, you know, like I maybe I have to die, but I'm not gonna will to die for her.

Speaker A:

No, it's not.

Speaker A:

If somebody tried to hurt her, you can bet Isaac had been in their face, right?

Speaker A:

What this would mean in our modern gramacular is I said that because I didn't want somebody to come along kill me so they could take her, okay?

Speaker A:

That's what it was all about.

Speaker A:

And in other words, he trusted Rebecca.

Speaker A:

Wasn't going to say, you know, yeah, I'll go marry this guy over here.

Speaker A:

You know, somebody come up courtner, she's just going to reject, right?

Speaker A:

But he didn't want someone to come in and murder him in order to take her.

Speaker A:

So that.

Speaker A:

That's what this is all about.

Speaker A:

And verse 10 Abimelech said, what is this you've done?

Speaker A:

One of the men might have lightly lain with her, and you should have brought guilt upon all of us.

Speaker A:

Is it.

Speaker A:

You know, someone may have done something, you know, just foolishly, and it had cursed our entire nation.

Speaker A:

So Abimelech, verse 11, charged all his people, saying, he that touches this man or his wife will be put to death.

Speaker A:

Why did he do that?

Speaker A:

Because Abimelech is honoring the covenant he made with Abraham.

Speaker A:

Okay?

Speaker A:

He made that covenant with Abraham.

Speaker A:

You and your possessions, you're safe here.

Speaker A:

He's reinforcing that with Isaac.

Speaker A:

He said, this is the covenant I made with your dad, and I'll make the same one with you.

Speaker A:

Right?

Speaker A:

So then, verse 12.

Speaker A:

Isaac sold in that land.

Speaker A:

Now remember, this is what, in the middle of a drought, in the middle of a famine, and Isaac sowed in this land.

Speaker A:

Isaac sowed in this land and received a hundredfold.

Speaker A:

And the Lord, in the middle of a drought, in the middle of a famine, Isaac sowed and received a hundredfold return.

Speaker A:

Verse 13.

Speaker A:

And the man Isaac grew great, went forward, grew until he became very great.

Speaker A:

Verse 14.

Speaker A:

For he had possession of flocks and herds and great stores of servants, and the Philistines envied him.

Speaker A:

There it is, right there.

Speaker A:

For all the wells which his father's service dug in the days of Abraham, his father, the Philistines, have stopped them up and filled them with dirt.

Speaker A:

And Abimelech said to Isaac, you need to leave us.

Speaker A:

You need to go from us, for you are much mightier than we are.

Speaker A:

Now, wait a minute.

Speaker A:

You're in the middle of a famine.

Speaker A:

And why would someone go around filling in the wells?

Speaker A:

You're in the middle of this drought.

Speaker A:

Why would someone be stopping up the wells?

Speaker A:

Jealousy.

Speaker A:

Envy.

Speaker A:

That's what the bird.

Speaker A:

That's what it says, right?

Speaker A:

And, you know, it got so bad.

Speaker A:

I mean, he's prospering.

Speaker A:

And everyone around him, his.

Speaker A:

Their crops are withered.

Speaker A:

It's not grown at all.

Speaker A:

Isaac's a growing.

Speaker A:

And these guys are getting jealous.

Speaker A:

Like, we want his land.

Speaker A:

We want it.

Speaker A:

So Abimelech says, you.

Speaker A:

You need to leave.

Speaker A:

Yeah, go from us.

Speaker A:

You're.

Speaker A:

You're.

Speaker A:

You're a whole lot mightier than what we are.

Speaker A:

In other words, I'm worried about the security here because they're going to come after me.

Speaker A:

All right, you.

Speaker A:

It's time for you to go.

Speaker A:

So verse 17.

Speaker A:

Isaac leaves.

Speaker A:

Isaac departed from there, pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar and dwelt there so he just moved over a couple miles away, moved over, dwelt there.

Speaker A:

Verse 18.

Speaker A:

Isaac dug again wells of water which they dug in the days of Abraham, his father.

Speaker A:

Same same wells, remember Abraham had that deal with, you know, Abimelech that, hey, this well here, your.

Speaker A:

Your servants keep.

Speaker A:

Your.

Speaker A:

Your people keep stopping them up.

Speaker A:

And we keep up fighting over these wells.

Speaker A:

And if ever looks said, the wells are yours, we got a covenant this day.

Speaker A:

Well here, Isaac moves back, you know, moving along, you know, okay, you don't want us here, we'll move on down in the valley.

Speaker A:

We'll get away from y'all.

Speaker A:

And he found a well which his father had dug on, stopped it because the Philistines had stopped him after the death of Abraham.

Speaker A:

And he called their names by the names which his father had called them.

Speaker A:

And verse 19.

Speaker A:

And Isaac's servants dug in the valley and found there a well of springing water.

Speaker A:

A spring, a living water, not just pool of water, you get up.

Speaker A:

But this was flowing water.

Speaker A:

Amen.

Speaker A:

Fresh.

Speaker A:

Praise God.

Speaker A:

And the herdman of Ger did strive with Isaac's herdman saying, this water's ours.

Speaker A:

And he called the name of the well Esek, which is contention, because they strove with him.

Speaker A:

So they dug another well.

Speaker A:

Then they wanted that one also.

Speaker A:

They call the name of it Sit now, which means hatred.

Speaker A:

And he removed from that place and dug another well.

Speaker A:

And that one they did not strive for.

Speaker A:

And he called the name of it Rehoboth, which is room.

Speaker A:

And he said, for now the Lord has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in this land.

Speaker A:

Verse 23.

Speaker A:

He went up from there to Beersheba.

Speaker A:

And the Lord appeared unto him the same night and said, I am the God of Abraham, your father.

Speaker A:

Do not fear, for I am with you.

Speaker A:

I will bless you and multiply your seed, your descendants, for my servant Abraham's sake.

Speaker A:

And he built there an altar, called the name upon the name of the Lord, pitched his tent there, and there Isaac's servants dug a well.

Speaker A:

They're digging a well everywhere they go.

Speaker A:

Praise God.

Speaker A:

And we're about out of time for today, so we'll take it up right there next time.

Speaker A:

What I want you to see from this though, is if.

Speaker A:

If you're not welcome one place, you can go to another.

Speaker A:

Amen.

Speaker A:

You're free to move wherever you want to go.

Speaker A:

And here, everywhere he went, he was blessed.

Speaker A:

He was blessed living over there.

Speaker A:

And gear are.

Speaker A:

He was living blessed living there.

Speaker A:

And you know, then they start arguing over as well so then he moved down into the valley.

Speaker A:

He was blessed there.

Speaker A:

He moved on over to a little bit, you know, they wanted that well, too.

Speaker A:

So then he moved on a little further.

Speaker A:

He's blessed there, too.

Speaker A:

Praise God.

Speaker A:

He's blessed everywhere he goes.

Speaker A:

Well, why?

Speaker A:

Because he had the blessing of Abraham upon him.

Speaker A:

Amen.

Speaker A:

God swore to him that he'd bless him because of his servant Abraham.

Speaker A:

What does that got to do with us today?

Speaker A:

Children of the most high God, heirs of God, joint heirs with Jesus of all things.

Speaker A:

That blessing is on you.

Speaker A:

Everything you touch should be blessed.

Speaker A:

Praise God.

Speaker A:

Hallelujah.

Speaker A:

Amen.

Speaker A:

That was a.

Speaker A:

If you didn't shout amen right there, you missed a good place to shout Amen.

About the Podcast

15 Minute Daily Bible Walk
Verse by Verse Through The Bible
This has been a project I have been contemplating for a long time.

Join me in walking through the Bible on our personal Bible study - one verse at at time. There is no "preaching" here. Just simple scripture reading with brief explanations and examples of what the scripture mean.

I was inspired to do this project based upon the program "Through The Bible" with Dr. Jay Veron McGee (who is passed on to be with the Lord for several years now). When I first started to study the Bible, his radio program helped me immensely. It took Dr. McGee 5 years to do a complete Bible Study.

I do not know how long it will take us. But you can start listening at anytime. My goal is to create a new episode each and every day (365 days per year).

Of course, "sometimes" life will get in the way (for many reasons). But I will pick it right back up where we left off (and try to catch up the days that were missed - to help keep us on track).

As I continue to add more episodes, you can join us at the most recent program or start at the beginning. Each episode is labeled as to the scriptures we are going to discuss.

I am so blessed you are here and I pray you will get a huge blessing as we join together in a "15 Minute Daily Bible Walk!" Amen!

About your host

Profile picture for Robert Thibodeau

Robert Thibodeau

I am a 12 year Army veteran as both enlisted and as a commissioned Cavalry Officer.
I am now a retired law enforcement supervisor...

I had my own business for seven years before I entered law enforcement.

As a cop, I was injured on the job on May 12, 2007 and after several surgeries over a couple of years, forced to retire in 2011.

As I was looking down the road to “what am I going to do next?” I started what is now known as a podcast (I had no clue at the time).

Within six months of starting (what I called) “My online radio program” I was offered an opportunity to be on nationwide AM radio. I learned A LOT in one year of doing that!

I then started the online Christian radio platform "Evangelism Radio" in the fall of 2010. It has had listeners in 160+ nations and all 50 states. We host 50+ Christian broadcasters on a weekly basis. We have been operating 24/7 for almost 14 years now. We have been rated #1 in the world by Shoutcast. com on several occasions in our genre. We recently transferred ownership of Evangelism Radio to another ministry so I could concentrate full time on podcasting, preaching and writing.

In 2018, I started the Kingdom Cross Roads Podcast to conduct interviews with Christian influencers from all walks of life and to play their interviews on the radio station. (The KCR Podcast has its own time slot on Evangelism Radio)!
We now have over 1600 episodes and almost 1100 interviews (in just over 6 years).

Looking out at the future of online Christian media, I noticed there was no viable platforms that catered only to the Christian podcast market.

In 2023, we launched a networking platform called, "FaithCasters" which connects "Great Christian podcasters with Great Christian Guests!" This helps to promote the work you do through podcast interviews! Check it out at https://FaithCaster.org

We recently launched "FaithCaster Academy" which serves as a training hub for ALL of our trainings (podcast training / speaker training / interview training, etc.). Members receive access to ALL of our training programs for one low, monthly membership fee. Members also receive FREE access to ALL of the LIVE trainings I conduct (1 or 2 per month) - while non-members have to pay to access the live trainings.

Between my podcast training program, conducting podcast interviews, appearing on other podcasts as guests, speaking at conferences (in person and virtually) and the podcast networking platform, I guess you could say “I’m all in” when it comes to podcasting and online media!

My total focus is to do all we can to assist you to “Get The Word Out” about your mission, services, products, ministry, books, business, etc.
