Hello everyone, everywhere.
Speaker A:Pastor Bob Thibodeau here.
Speaker A:Welcome to your 15 minute daily Bible walk for today.
Speaker A:We're so blessed you're joining us.
Speaker A:Last time we left off in Genesis chapter 22 at verse 12.
Speaker A:So we'll start right there today and just dive right back into it.
Speaker A:Amen.
Speaker A:And he said, this is God speaking to Abraham.
Speaker A:Now set the stage again.
Speaker A:Abraham's offering Isaac as a sacrifice.
Speaker A:Okay, we did a couple of great episodes on that, so I'm not going to repeat myself to set it all up for you.
Speaker A:Go back and listen to those.
Speaker A:As he's getting ready to, to slay Isaac and, and offer him to God.
Speaker A:God stops him.
Speaker A:And he says, lay not your hand upon the lad, neither do anything to him.
Speaker A:For now I know that you fear God, seeing that you have not withheld your son, your only son from me.
Speaker A:And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked.
Speaker A:And behold, behind him a ram was caught in the thicket by his horns.
Speaker A:And Abraham went, took the ram and offered him up for a burnt offering instead of his son.
Speaker A:I remember on the walk out there, Isaac had asked him, you know, we got the fire, you know, we got, you know, the, the knife.
Speaker A:Where's the, where's the offering?
Speaker A:Where's the lamb?
Speaker A:And he said, God will provide himself the lamb.
Speaker A:And here he did.
Speaker A:And Abraham, verse 14, called the name of that place Jehovah, Jireh, as it is this day.
Speaker A:In other words, God provides the Lord who will provide.
Speaker A:As it is called to this day in the mount of the Lord, it shall be seen.
Speaker A:And the angel of the Lord called Abraham out of heaven the second time and said, by myself, I have sworn saith the Lord.
Speaker A:For because you have done this thing and you have not withheld your son, your only son, then in blessing I will bless you.
Speaker A:In multiplying, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven and as the sand which is upon the seashore.
Speaker A:And your seed shall possess the gate of his enemies.
Speaker A:And in your seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed.
Speaker A:Because you have obeyed my voice, folks, this same blessing belongs to us.
Speaker A:Well, what do you mean, Brother Bob?
Speaker A:We haven't offered up our kids to God.
Speaker A:Listen to me.
Speaker A:If you're born again, that means you are now in the kingdom.
Speaker A:That means you are now grafted in.
Speaker A:That means you are now a descendant of Abraham.
Speaker A:You are the seed of Abraham.
Speaker A:And remember, the blessing is upon Abraham and his seed, his descendants through Christ.
Speaker A:Because he's a descendant of Abraham, we are grafted in praise God.
Speaker A:Shout Amen.
Speaker A:Somebody somewhere praise God.
Speaker A:All right, continuing on, verse 19.
Speaker A:So Abraham returned to his young men.
Speaker A:They rose up and went together to Beersheba.
Speaker A:And Abraham dwelt in Bethshape in Beersheba.
Speaker A:And it came to pass after these things that it was told Abraham saying, behold Milka, she has also borne children unto your brother.
Speaker A:Nahor Huz, his firstborn, Buz, his brother, and Kimel, the father of Aram and Chesed and Hazel and Peldash and Jeldeplah and Bethuel and Bethel begot Rebekah, whose eight, these eight Milcah did bear to Nahor, Abraham's brother and his concubine, whose name was Ramah.
Speaker A:She bare also Teba and Gerim and Theash and Mecha.
Speaker A:And that concludes chapter 22.
Speaker A:Now we'll go into Genesis chapter 23.
Speaker A:Now remember, at this time, if you do the calculations says, and Sarah was 127 years old.
Speaker A:These were the years of the life of Sarah.
Speaker A:So Sarah's 127, Abraham's 137.
Speaker A:And remember, Shem, we talked about him little bit back.
Speaker A:He's still alive.
Speaker A:He's 527 now.
Speaker A:And that's going to become important as we get over here into Noah.
Speaker A:All right?
Speaker A:Sarah was 127 years old.
Speaker A:These were the years of the life of Sarah.
Speaker A:And Sarah died in Kerjatharba, the same as Hebron in the land of Canaan.
Speaker A:And Abraham came to the to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her.
Speaker A:And Abraham stood up before his dead and spoke to the sons of Heth, saying, I am a stranger and a sojourner with you.
Speaker A:Give me a possession of a burying place with you that I may bury my dead out of my sight.
Speaker A:And the children of Heth answered Abraham, saying to him, hear us, my lord.
Speaker A:You are a mighty prince among us in the choice of our sepulchers.
Speaker A:Bury your dead.
Speaker A:None of us shall withhold from you his sepulcher so that you may bury your dead.
Speaker A:And Abraham stood up and bowed himself to the people of the land, even to the children of Heth.
Speaker A:Now, who's half let's.
Speaker A:That's the second son of Canaan.
Speaker A:Remember him right?
Speaker A:Second son of Canaan, son of Ham, son of Noah.
Speaker A:So Abraham's still talking to relatives here.
Speaker A:All right.
Speaker A:It says to the children of hell, verse 8.
Speaker A:And he communed with them, saying, if it be your your mind that I should bury my dead out of my sight, hear me and entreat for me to Ephron the son of Zohar, the reason he's doing this.
Speaker A:In order to establish the legality of things, there has to be an exchange.
Speaker A:I mean, if you go into a store, say, oh, this watch looks good.
Speaker A:I think I'll take it and walk out, you're in trouble, right?
Speaker A:But if you walk up and say, I like this watch.
Speaker A:I'd like to have it.
Speaker A:What can I give you?
Speaker A:And they're gonna say, $500.
Speaker A:That's a bit steep.
Speaker A:What if I traded in, you know, my laptop?
Speaker A:How much would you give me for my laptop?
Speaker A:Now, some stores won't negotiate, but I just hear me out.
Speaker A:So.
Speaker A:Well, I take $100 off.
Speaker A:Okay, here's my laptop.
Speaker A:Here's $400.
Speaker A:Give me this watch.
Speaker A:Can you walk out?
Speaker A:That's a legal deal.
Speaker A:Because there was an exchange that took place.
Speaker A:You walk into the grocery store and say, oh, this steak looks good.
Speaker A:And you try and walk out with it.
Speaker A:You got trouble.
Speaker A:You go up to the cashier and say, I'd like to buy this steak.
Speaker A:And she says, $20.
Speaker A:And you give $20 to her and walk out with it.
Speaker A:It's a legal deal.
Speaker A:There's an exchange that takes place.
Speaker A:And that's what Abraham is saying here.
Speaker A:You know, he says, hear me.
Speaker A:Entreat for me to Ephron the son of Zoar, that he may give me the cave at Makapal which he has, which is at the end of his field.
Speaker A:For as much money as it's worth, he'll give it to me for possession of a buried place among.
Speaker A:He says, whatever he wants for it, I'll pay for it.
Speaker A:And Ephraim dwelled among the children of Heth.
Speaker A:Ephron the head I'd, answered Abram and Abraham in the audience of the children of Heth.
Speaker A:Even all that went in at the gate of the city, saying, no, my lord, hear me the field.
Speaker A:I'll just give it to you.
Speaker A:The cave that's in it, I'll give it to you in the presence of the sons of my people.
Speaker A:I give it to you.
Speaker A:Go ahead and bury your dead.
Speaker A:And Abraham bowed down himself before the people of the land.
Speaker A:And he spoke to Ephron and the audience of the people of the land, saying, if you'll give it to me, I pray hear me.
Speaker A:I will give you the money for the field.
Speaker A:Take it of me, and I will bury my dead there.
Speaker A:He wants to make this a legal deal that they can't come back later and claim it.
Speaker A:And Abram.
Speaker A:Ephraim answered Abram saying, my lord, listen to me.
Speaker A:The land's worth 400 shekels of silver.
Speaker A:What's that between you and me?
Speaker A:Just go ahead and bury your dead.
Speaker A:Abraham hearkened to Ephraim, and Abraham weighed Ephron, the silver which he had named in the audience of the sons of Heth.
Speaker A:400 shekels of silver, current money with the merchant verse 17, and the field of Ephron, which was in Mechapel.
Speaker A:And again, my pronunciations of these may not be right, but you get the idea.
Speaker A:If you're reading along, you understand this is before the field of Mamre, the field and the cave which was therein.
Speaker A:All the trees that were in the field, that were in all the borders round about, were made sure unto Abraham for a present unto Abraham for a possession in the presence of the children of Heth, before all that went in at the gate of the city.
Speaker A:So now it's a legal deal.
Speaker A:It was publicly acknowledged.
Speaker A:In other words, it was recorded that Abraham now owns that field.
Speaker A:After this, Abraham buried Sarah, his wife, in the cave of the field of Machapella before Mamre, the same as Hebron in the land of Canaan.
Speaker A:And the field and the cave that's therein were made sure on Abraham for possession of a burying place by the sons of Heth.
Speaker A:We'll conclude our study there for today as we get ready to jump into chapter 24 next time.
