Genesis Ch 19 vs 1 to vs 14
Lot's Dilemma:
Protecting Strangers or Family?
Abraham's intercession for Sodom and Gomorrah is the main focus of this episode. Pastor Bob Thibodeau dives deep into Genesis, discussing why Abraham stopped pleading with God at ten righteous people. He explains that Abraham believed Lot's family might be safe, as he counted them among the potential righteous. The conversation then shifts to the arrival of angels in Sodom and Lot's desperate attempts to protect them from the city's wickedness. Throughout the talk, Pastor Bob emphasizes the importance of prayer and its power to change outcomes for loved ones.

Hello everyone everywhere.
Speaker A:Pastor Bob Thibodeau here.
Speaker A:Welcome to your 15 minute daily Bible walk for today.
Speaker A:We're so blessed you're joining us today.
Speaker A:We left off last time and finishing up Genesis chapter 18, where Abraham was interceding for Sodom and Gomorrah.
Speaker A:And we, we read.
Speaker A:And we'll get into this again today, probably we get down to verse 14 in Genesis 19 about why Abraham stopped at 10.
Speaker A:Okay, and I'll just summarize that real quick.
Speaker A:Why did Abraham stop?
Speaker A:Intersee.
Speaker A:He got him all the way down from destroying the entire city and area down to.
Speaker A:What if there's 40?
Speaker A:What if there's only 30?
Speaker A:What if there's, you know.
Speaker A:And he got them all the way down to 10 and then stopped.
Speaker A:And we said this, and we'll see this again in verse 14, Genesis 19.
Speaker A:Because he believed that lots, you know, he had a family of 10 people, had three daughters that were married, three sons in law, there's six, two daughters at home, there's eight.
Speaker A:Him and his wife were 10.
Speaker A:So he figured Lot's family is at least safe in this now.
Speaker A:Okay?
Speaker A:And because of them, Lord will spare the city.
Speaker A:And that's why Abram left off in verse 33 in chapter 18, he said Abraham went home, returned to his place.
Speaker A:The Lord went his way because he left off communing with Abram or Abraham.
Speaker A:So today we take up in Genesis chapter 19, verse number one, there came two angels to Sodom at evening.
Speaker A:And Lot sat in the gate of Sodom.
Speaker A:That's important every time in the Old Testament.
Speaker A:Here you see where they sat at the gate of the city.
Speaker A:That means they are in positions of authority, okay?
Speaker A:They are part of the ruling class of that city.
Speaker A:They may not be the mayor or the governor or whatever, but they're on like the council and all that stuff that he was in a seat of authority.
Speaker A:Authority for Sodom.
Speaker A:Because Lot sat in the gate of Sodom.
Speaker A:Lot, seeing them, rose up to meet them and he bowed himself with his face towards the ground.
Speaker A:He recognized them.
Speaker A:Understand that these just weren't wayward travelers coming in.
Speaker A:And Lot was being nice and hospitable.
Speaker A:No, he knew who they were.
Speaker A:He had either seen them or he was sensing who they were in the.
Speaker A:By the spirit, okay, we'll just leave it like that.
Speaker A:He knew who they were because he got up to go meet them, right?
Speaker A:And he said, behold now, my lords, Amen.
Speaker A:Turn in here, I pray you, into your servant's house and stay all night.
Speaker A:Wash your feet.
Speaker A:And then you can rise up early and go on your way.
Speaker A:They said, no, we'll just stay out here in the street tonight.
Speaker A:And he pressed upon them greatly.
Speaker A:And they turned into him and entered into his house.
Speaker A:And he made them a feast and then break unleavened bread.
Speaker A:See, he's still following the Jewish traditions here, right?
Speaker A:And they did eat.
Speaker A:But before they lay down, the men of the city, before they could even go to bed, before Lot's families could even go to bed, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house.
Speaker A:Both old and young.
Speaker A:All the people from every quarter now here says all the men, old and young and all the people.
Speaker A:Why?
Speaker A:Why did they say all the people?
Speaker A:Because there's this big commotion going on.
Speaker A:People want to see what's going on.
Speaker A:So men and women now are coming out, young and old, they're all coming out to see what.
Speaker A:What's going on.
Speaker A:Why, why this big commotion out here?
Speaker A:And they called on the Lot and said unto him, where are the men which came into you this night?
Speaker A:Bring them out here to us that we may know them.
Speaker A:That word no indicates a sexual relationship, an intimacy.
Speaker A:But it wasn't going to be intimacy.
Speaker A:They were going to rape them.
Speaker A:That's how perverted these people were.
Speaker A:And I might venture to say you can talk the same way about our society today.
Speaker A:Amen.
Speaker A:In some quarters of this area, of this nation and the world, but mainly in this nation, that is a good possibility to happen during these big riots and stuff like that.
Speaker A:I'm just going to let that go.
Speaker A:I'm not commenting on that any further.
Speaker A:You can read in between the lines.
Speaker A:Amen.
Speaker A:But that's what they wanted with these men.
Speaker A:Lot went out the door, he went outside to talk to these, this crowd, and he shut the door behind him and said, I pray you, brother, I'm begging you here, don't do this wickedness.
Speaker A:Don't be.
Speaker A:Don't act so wickedly.
Speaker A:How many times in modern day society have you seen these commotions going on?
Speaker A:And some cities will just.
Speaker A:We'll just call it the cities right now.
Speaker A:And these big riots are going on and someone walks out to try and quiet the crowd down.
Speaker A:What usually happen, what you.
Speaker A:What will usually happen in that instance, the crowd attacks that person, right?
Speaker A:They're taking it out on him because they want their way.
Speaker A:And they're tired of listening to the, the conservative talk.
Speaker A:We'll just go like that.
Speaker A:They're tired of listening to conservative voices when they want all hell to break loose in their town.
Speaker A:And they want to do what they want and they want you to accept it.
Speaker A:Instead of that, they'll attack the person who's trying to.
Speaker A:Status.
Speaker A:Say, look, let's quiet this stuff now, right?
Speaker A:That's what happens here.
Speaker A:He said, don't do so wickedly.
Speaker A:And chap.
Speaker A:Verse 8.
Speaker A:Behold, now, I have two daughters which have not known any man.
Speaker A:Let me.
Speaker A:I pray you bring them out to you.
Speaker A:You do to them as good what's good in your eyes.
Speaker A:Just do these.
Speaker A:Do nothing to these men, for they came under the shadow of my roof.
Speaker A:He goes, I am being hospitable to them.
Speaker A:And you know, we're here with you all the time, is what he's saying.
Speaker A:I'll give you my daughters.
Speaker A:You can do with them as you please.
Speaker A:First, what kind of father would do that?
Speaker A:But second, look at how far he was willing to go to protect these visitors.
Speaker A:He knew who they were.
Speaker A:Amen.
Speaker A:He knew what would happen if they attacked these two.
Speaker A:We'll just say angels, okay?
Speaker A:He knew what was going to happen if they did something like that.
Speaker A:And he was willing to say, here, you can have my virgin daughters, but don't.
Speaker A:Don't mess with these boys here.
Speaker A:That's what he's telling them.
Speaker A:That is just shocking to me.
Speaker A:But that's what the Bible says.
Speaker A:So we know that's what happened.
Speaker A:And verse nine, they said, stand back.
Speaker A:And they said again, this fella, this fella comes here to live, and he will needs to be a judge.
Speaker A:He says, you came.
Speaker A:This guy has come to our town to live, and now he thinks he's a judge over us.
Speaker A:It's bad enough he's one of the honchos in the city, but now he thinks he's better than we are.
Speaker A:That's what.
Speaker A:That's what they're saying right here.
Speaker A:Now we're going to deal worse with you than we were with them.
Speaker A:And they pressed upon the man, Lot, and came near to breaking the door.
Speaker A:I mean, they.
Speaker A:They were going to tear him limb from limb.
Speaker A:The men put forth their hand, pull Lot into the house to them and shut the door.
Speaker A:And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great.
Speaker A:Every person out there was blind.
Speaker A:So they weary themselves trying to find the door, right?
Speaker A:They were so blind, they were still trying to get inside.
Speaker A:They were.
Speaker A:They were so angry they were trying to get inside.
Speaker A:They couldn't see and they just didn't understand.
Speaker A:And pretty soon, you know, they said they weary themselves.
Speaker A:They started getting wore out because they didn't know where they were or anything else.
Speaker A:Now, verse 12, the men said, a lot, is there anyone here besides you?
Speaker A:Sons in law?
Speaker A:Your sons, your daughters, whatsoever you have in the city, bring them out of this place.
Speaker A:Because verse 13, we will destroy this place, because the cry of them has grown great before the face of the Lord.
Speaker A:And the Lord Elohim has sent us to destroy it.
Speaker A:And a lot went out.
Speaker A:Now the crowd's still outside.
Speaker A:It's just they can't see nothing.
Speaker A:They won't.
Speaker A:They're bumping into people running over people.
Speaker A:They don't know who's who.
Speaker A:So Lot safe going out the door right now.
Speaker A:He spoke to his sons in law, which had married his daughters and said, get up, get out of this place.
Speaker A:For the Lord Elohim will destroy this city.
Speaker A:Now they know the commotion going on.
Speaker A:They've heard about it.
Speaker A:Hey, something was going on.
Speaker A:I said, and all of a sudden, Lot shows up at the door.
Speaker A:He probably told him, what's happening, what.
Speaker A:Hey, yeah, this is.
Speaker A:Folks, this is bad.
Speaker A:You need to come with me because we're leaving.
Speaker A:And he seemed as one that mocked to his sons in law, hey, old man, get out of here.
Speaker A:Remember, they brought.
Speaker A:They were brought up in that city.
Speaker A:He'd already given his daughters to people of that city, right?
Speaker A:And when the morning arose, and then the angels hastened a lot, saying, all right, arise, take your wife and your two daughters which are here.
Speaker A:Two daughters which are here.
Speaker A:Nothing you can do about the ones that made the decision to stay, lest you be consumed in the iniquity.
Speaker A:The punishment of the city.
Speaker A:Now that's important as well.
Speaker A:I pray for my family every single day.
Speaker A:I know most of you do the same.
Speaker A:I get told all the time.
Speaker A:Why don't you go talk to them?
Speaker A:Go talk to them.
Speaker A:You know, there's.
Speaker A:Have you ever, as we've seen over here, when you tried to.
Speaker A:Jesus said, a prophet's not without honor.
Speaker A:In other words, he has honor everywhere he goes, except in his hometown and among his own family.
Speaker A:Now, they may reverence you, as you know, they know what you're talking about.
Speaker A:They may reverence you as the Father, they may reverence your knowledge and your understanding of the gospel, but yet try and preach to them, they shut right up, the defenses go up.
Speaker A:I mean, when you talk to them about, you know, you shouldn't be doing this, you shouldn't be doing that, shouldn't be doing this, that and the other thing, too, a lot of times they just shut right down and it's, it just doesn't.
Speaker A:It doesn't go, well, put it like that.
Speaker A:And I get told all the time, go talk to social, go talk to.
Speaker A:Go talk to him.
Speaker A:And, you know, I try and bring the Lord up in conversation, of course, as I know you do as well.
Speaker A:But at the same time, if things are going, let's say, not the way that you are praying, they would go a lot of times that's a lot better to, to live your lifestyle and to witness when you can and to pray a lot.
Speaker A:Because prayer, folks, changes things.
Speaker A:Prayer changes people.
Speaker A:Prayer changes the destinies of people because they have to be put into a position where they become willing to seek the Lord, where they become willing to hear about what they've been doing wrong in their lifestyles and all that.
Speaker A:Okay.
Speaker A:And I just wanted to bring that out.
Speaker A:Someone needed to hear that today.
Speaker A:You want to witness to me because you, you love your family so much.
Speaker A:You love your family so much that you do anything for them, but you can't make them be born again.
Speaker A:If that was the case, everybody would be born again because they got praying grandmas everywhere, praying papas everywhere.
Speaker A:My family knows they're prayed for every single day.
Speaker A:And, you know, when things start going wrong in their life, they know they can pick up the phone and ask me to pray, and I will.
Speaker A:And I'll usually take that opportunity to just plant a seed, I guess you could say, about what we've been talking about here.
Speaker A:Amen.
Speaker A:But it's the Lord putting them in those situations, allowing those situations to happen.
Speaker A:Let's put it like that.
Speaker A:So that's a word of encouragement for someone out there today.
Speaker A:All right, how much time we got left up?
Speaker A:It's time to wrap this up.
Speaker A:All right, so we're going to take it right there.
Speaker A:We'll leave off.
Speaker A:We'll leave off and we'll do start again next time.
Speaker A:Chapter 19 of Genesis, and we'll start off in verse 15.
Speaker A:So leave your comments down below.
Speaker A:Tell me what you thought about that, about, about the scripture reading for today and also about that little tidbit about praying for your family.
Speaker A:Right.
Speaker A:Let me know what you think about that till next time is passed about reminding you to be blessed in all that you do.
