Episode 27
Genesis Ch 19 vs 15 to vs 30
The Destruction of Sodom:
What Really Happened
Pastor Bob Thibodeau dives into Genesis 19, focusing on the urgency of Lot and his family escaping Sodom before its destruction. The angels warn Lot to gather his family and flee to avoid the impending doom, but not everyone takes it seriously.
Lot struggles with the urgency and is left to watch as some of his loved ones choose to stay behind, ultimately leading to their loss. The episode highlights the importance of heeding warnings and the consequences of looking back at a life of sin, as illustrated by Lot's wife turning into a pillar of salt.
The discussion wraps up with Lot's journey to safety and the challenges he faces afterward, setting the stage for the next part of their story.

Hello everyone everywhere.
Speaker A:Pastor Bob Thibodeau here.
Speaker A:Welcome to your daily 15 minute Bible walk.
Speaker A:We're so blessed you're joining us today.
Speaker A:Last time we left off in Genesis.
Speaker A:Chapter 19, verse 15.
Speaker A:That's what we'll take it up at today.
Speaker A:Set the stage.
Speaker A:The angels have come down to get Lot and his family out of town.
Speaker A:Because they're going to destroy Sodom and go.
Speaker A:And the angels told Lot, go tell your sons and daughters that are in this city as well as your family here that you got to leave.
Speaker A:Because we're gonna this place get it get flattened here.
Speaker A:And we covered that.
Speaker A:But lot has 10 people.
Speaker A:Him, his wife, two daughters at home, three sons in law and three daughters.
Speaker A:Okay, so now the sons in law, because the daughters are married to them, you know, they, they were mocking him.
Speaker A:Tell him you're crazy, old man.
Speaker A:You know, get out here type thing.
Speaker A:And the daughters stayed.
Speaker A:So those six are going to be lost.
Speaker A:There's nothing Lot can do about it.
Speaker A:So now morning comes.
Speaker A:Verse 15, chapter Genesis 19, verse 15.
Speaker A:When the morning arose, the angels hastened Lot saying, rise, take your wife and your two daughters which are here.
Speaker A:Lest you be consumed in the iniquity of the city.
Speaker A:And while he lingered, he's still trying to figure out how to get his other daughters out of here.
Speaker A:The men laid hold upon his hand.
Speaker A:Upon the hand of his wife and upon the hand of his two daughters.
Speaker A:And the Lord being merciful to him, Yellowhim being merciful to Lot.
Speaker A:And they brought him forth and set him outside the city limits.
Speaker A:Look, you got to get out of here.
Speaker A:Go.
Speaker A:Verse 17.
Speaker A:It came to pass when they brought them forth abroad.
Speaker A:He said, escape for your life.
Speaker A:Do not look behind you.
Speaker A:Neither stay in all the plain.
Speaker A:Escape to the mountain, lest you be consumed.
Speaker A:And lots.
Speaker A:In other words, this whole area is going to get wiped out.
Speaker A:And Lot said unto them, oh, not so, my Lord.
Speaker A:Behold now, verse 19.
Speaker A:Your.
Speaker A:Your servants found grace in your sight.
Speaker A:And you have magnified your mercy which you've shown to me and saving my life.
Speaker A:I can't.
Speaker A:I can't escape to the mountain lest some evil take me and I die.
Speaker A:Lot end up going to the mountain anyway, as we're about to see, right?
Speaker A:He said, I can't make it to the mountain.
Speaker A:I'm too old.
Speaker A:I'm.
Speaker A:I.
Speaker A:I just can't.
Speaker A:I can't get that far.
Speaker A:I can't go climbing up the mountain and all that is it.
Speaker A:Verse 20.
Speaker A:Behold, there's this city nearby that I can flee into.
Speaker A:It's just a little tiny one.
Speaker A:Can't you just spare that little, tiny city?
Speaker A:He said, let me escape there.
Speaker A:It's just a little one.
Speaker A:Little town, little village and, and we can live there.
Speaker A:In verse 21, he said unto him, see, I have accepted you concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city for which you have spoken of.
Speaker A:Haste thee, in other words.
Speaker A:But you gotta hurry, you gotta escape there.
Speaker A:I cannot do anything until you are there.
Speaker A:Therefore, the name of that city was called Zoar or little.
Speaker A:Right, so you know the movies, the, the pick, the, you know, them running, them running towards this city, right?
Speaker A:So lot enters verse 23.
Speaker A:As the sun was rising, Lot entered into the city of Zoar.
Speaker A:Now hold on a minute over here, verse 15.
Speaker A:When the morning arose, the angels took them.
Speaker A:And when verse 23, the sun was risen upon the earth.
Speaker A:So that period of time between early morning Twilight and say, 8:00 in the morning, so about two hours, okay, they've gotten out of the town and now they had to run to the sand.
Speaker A:From the studies, which I understand, it was about, probably about five miles.
Speaker A:So that makes sense, okay, half hour.
Speaker A:So get out of the city then, you know, they make it four or five miles to Zoar.
Speaker A:All right?
Speaker A:And now eight, nine o'clock in the morning is where we're at now.
Speaker A:Verse 23.
Speaker A:The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar.
Speaker A:Then once he is in that city, says, welcome to the city limits of Zoar.
Speaker A:Then the Lord reigned upon Sodom and Gomorrah, brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven.
Speaker A:There's been talk, and I kind of tend to believe it, about maybe a tale of a comet and swept through the area.
Speaker A:And now all these meteorites and things like that just happen to be coming down right at that point in time.
Speaker A:I don't know, nobody knows for sure, but it did happen.
Speaker A:It did happen.
Speaker A:As a matter of fact, I think they found meteorite fragments and stuff in that area, which would explain what this is all about, why it would look like fire raining down from heaven.
Speaker A:Okay, they don't have to be big, you know, you're not talking, you know, car size, meteors streaking through, slamming into the ground.
Speaker A:Could have been, okay, probably was a few that size.
Speaker A:But, you know, here we are, you know, 4,000 years later, still discussing it.
Speaker A:So we know what happened.
Speaker A:And the, the scientific evidence proves that area had some devastating things happen to it.
Speaker A:All right, that's not the subject of today's.
Speaker A:Broadcast.
Speaker A:That's not what we're doing here.
Speaker A:We're going through verse by verse through the Bible.
Speaker A:All right?
Speaker A:The Lord, verse 24, reigned upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah, brimstone and fire from the Lor Elohim out of heaven.
Speaker A:And he overthrew those cities and all the plain and all the inhabitants of the cities and that which grew upon the ground.
Speaker A:I mean, it just wiped out cattle, live livestock, the crops, the city, everything.
Speaker A:Verse 26.
Speaker A:But his wife looked back from behind him.
Speaker A:Why?
Speaker A:Because her other daughters are still in that place.
Speaker A:She wasn't.
Speaker A:You know, some people say it's because she wanted to be back in all that city of sin and she was looking back at that sin.
Speaker A:Yes, she had sin in her heart, and that's why.
Speaker A:No, her other daughters were there, her grandkids were there.
Speaker A:She turned back looking at what was happening to her family.
Speaker A:It broke her heart.
Speaker A:But she violated what.
Speaker A:What she was commanded not to do.
Speaker A:They specifically told her, do not look back.
Speaker A:Okay?
Speaker A:And she became a pillar of salt.
Speaker A:Okay?
Speaker A:Now, there are pillars of rock formations in that area.
Speaker A:Okay?
Speaker A:There are some.
Speaker A:I'm not even going down that rabbit hole, okay, about what she turned into a literal pillar of salt, because that's what the Bible says.
Speaker A:Well, if the Bible is literal and you believe 100 it's literal, then she turned into a pillar of salt.
Speaker A:Could it be a metaphor?
Speaker A:Metaphors are throughout the Bible.
Speaker A:Okay, Maybe she turned around and got hit.
Speaker A:Maybe, you know, I don't know.
Speaker A:I'm not even going to speculate.
Speaker A:Because Lot and his daughters had to go on without her.
Speaker A:Okay?
Speaker A:That's all that matters.
Speaker A:The Bible says she turned into a pillar of salt.
Speaker A:That's where we're going to leave it at on that.
Speaker A:Okay?
Speaker A:That's not the subject matter of the Bible study that we're doing here.
Speaker A:We.
Speaker A:If you have a question on that, leave it down in the show notes below.
Speaker A:Maybe some experts on this can answer your question in that.
Speaker A:Okay.
Speaker A:I've seen some documentaries and things like that, this.
Speaker A:That discuss different possibilities.
Speaker A:Let's put it like that.
Speaker A:You can look them up online on YouTube and all that stuff.
Speaker A:That's not the subject matter of this Bible study.
Speaker A:Bible study says she turned into a pillar of salt.
Speaker A:That's.
Speaker A:We're going to leave it at verse 27.
Speaker A:Abraham got up early in that morning and went to the place where he had stood before the Lord.
Speaker A:And he looked towards Sodom and Gomorrah and toward all the land of the plain and beheld and the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.
Speaker A:And it came to pass.
Speaker A:Verse 29.
Speaker A:When God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham and had sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow.
Speaker A:When he overthrew the cities in which lot dwelt, Abraham knew it was going to happen.
Speaker A:That's why he got up, went back to that place to see.
Speaker A:He's probably thinking in his heart, I guess they got a lot out of there.
Speaker A:Yeah, they got a lot out of there.
Speaker A:Didn't get lost, family out of there.
Speaker A:He got the household out of there, but not all his family.
Speaker A:Verse 29 came to pass when God destroyed the cities of the plane.
Speaker A:God remembered Abraham and sent Lot out of the midst of the other.
Speaker A:When he overthrew the cities and lich in which lot dwelt.
Speaker A:Verse 30.
Speaker A:A lot went up out of Zoar and dwelt in the mountain.
Speaker A:He left Zoar and his two daughters with him, for he feared to dwell in Zoar, because if there's anybody that escaped, they'd be coming to Zoar and they'd say, this guy's responsible for this.
Speaker A:Right?
Speaker A:You want to talk about an act of God?
Speaker A:And this guy was talking about, God's gonna do this stuff.
Speaker A:It's his fault.
Speaker A:They're gonna hold him and his family responsible.
Speaker A:So he got a little, little paranoid, said, we need to get out of here, because if anybody got out of that mess and they're coming here, they're gonna blame it all on us.
Speaker A:So he whipped up to the mountain, which the ages told him to go to anyway.
Speaker A:He and his two daughters with him.
Speaker A:For he feared to dwell in Zoar, and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters.
Speaker A:And we're going to leave it there because I want to do a little bit of a deep dive into what's happening now that they're in the cave.
Speaker A:All right?
Speaker A:And I don't want to have to rush it, so we'll leave this episode right there.
Speaker A:Leave your comments down below.
Speaker A:Let me know what you're thinking.
Speaker A:Share these episodes, folks, on your social media.
Speaker A:This whole thing is meant to.
Speaker A:To share with the world.
Speaker A:That's why we're doing it on video, we're doing it on podcast.
Speaker A:You know this.
Speaker A:The Bible's meant to be shared with the world, not just to read to yourself.
Speaker A:Yes, it's important for you to do your own Bible study.
Speaker A:It is.
Speaker A:But it's also important for you to be a witness to others.
Speaker A:And we talked in a couple episodes back how sometimes how hard that is when you're trying to witness to other people and they don't want to hear it.
Speaker A:Sometimes they'll watch a short video.
Speaker A:That's why we're keeping these Bible studies short.
Speaker A:Try and keep them between 10 and 15 minutes each so that people can listen to it in their car on the way to work.
Speaker A:They can watch it on a coffee break or something like that at their in their desktop, at their office, or on their phones.
Speaker A:We try and keep them short so they get the word of God and still go through the whole Bible with us.
Speaker A:Amen.
Speaker A:So leave your comments down below.
Speaker A:Share these so things out far and wide.
Speaker A:Till next time, Is Pastor Bob reminding you to be blessed in all that you do.
