Understanding Lot's Daughters: A Closer Look

Pastor Bob Thibodeau dives into some heavy stuff today, focusing on Genesis chapter 19, where Lot’s daughters make a wild decision to ensure their family line continues. They think they’re the last people on earth after witnessing the destruction of their city, so they get their dad drunk to have kids. It’s a serious moment that raises questions about survival and responsibility. Pastor Bob breaks it down, explaining their mindset and the context of their actions. He reinforces that this wasn’t about scandal but about preserving their family’s legacy in a world turned upside down.

Speaker A:

Amen.

Speaker A:

Praise God.

Speaker A:

Don't shut me down.

Speaker A:

I'm preaching good already.

Speaker A:

Hallelujah.

Speaker A:

All right, we left off in Genesis chapter 19 in verse 30, where Lot and his two daughters went to dwell in a cave up in the mountains.

Speaker A:

All right, now, verse 31, the firstborn said to the younger, our Father's old.

Speaker A:

There's no other man in earth now to come into us after the manner of all the earth.

Speaker A:

Come, let us make our father drink some wine, and we'll lie with him that we may preserve seed of our father.

Speaker A:

Now, why would she come up.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

After witnessing the destruction of what they knew as the world.

Speaker A:

Okay, they were.

Speaker A:

They had never gone anywhere else.

Speaker A:

They.

Speaker A:

Everything they knew, they seen all.

Speaker A:

They seen the riots, they seen it.

Speaker A:

They knew what was happening.

Speaker A:

They also, and we can tell here they are of childbearing age, put it like that, maybe 13, 15, 18, I don't know.

Speaker A:

Okay.

Speaker A:

Point being, they seen what happened.

Speaker A:

They also knew that they were part of the lineage of Noah.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

I didn't.

Speaker A:

I'm not going to take time to go back and cover all that down through Abraham again.

Speaker A:

Okay?

Speaker A:

We.

Speaker A:

We established that with the study of Shem, if you remember that.

Speaker A:

Okay?

Speaker A:

Lot, they knew who Abraham was, and they know him and Lot were close.

Speaker A:

Okay?

Speaker A:

So they knew they were related.

Speaker A:

You know, this is an uncle.

Speaker A:

That's my Uncle Abe type thing.

Speaker A:

And they knew that Shem was the son of Noah.

Speaker A:

Okay?

Speaker A:

And then he came down to visit with Abraham.

Speaker A:

They probably met the guy.

Speaker A:

All right, you were there for the flood.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

There was nothing left.

Speaker A:

I mean, you know, you see all these cities and people now, it started with me and my dad and my brothers and our wives, and that was it, you know?

Speaker A:

So now they're looking at everything they've known and exist.

Speaker A:

God promised he would never send a flood on the earth like that again.

Speaker A:

And they're thinking about all this.

Speaker A:

And they seen God fulfill his promise.

Speaker A:

He didn't use a flood this time.

Speaker A:

He rained fire and brimstone down from heaven.

Speaker A:

To destroy everything.

Speaker A:

And as far as they.

Speaker A:

As far as the eye could see, everything they knew was gone.

Speaker A:

So now they're like, he's starting over again.

Speaker A:

God's starting all over again.

Speaker A:

All these people in the world are dead, and it's just us, okay?

Speaker A:

God did it once.

Speaker A:

He can do it again.

Speaker A:

So here's what we're gonna.

Speaker A:

There's no other man here but dad.

Speaker A:

That's.

Speaker A:

That's the thinking now on this oldest daughter.

Speaker A:

And it makes complete sense when you look at it that way.

Speaker A:

All right?

Speaker A:

You may disagree.

Speaker A:

Why would she want to do something like that?

Speaker A:

This is why she's believing that it's their responsibility now to repopulate the earth, just like Shem and his family did, right?

Speaker A:

Their great, great, great, great, great, you know, uncle from, you know, seven removed or whatever was from their great grandfather.

Speaker A:

I mean, we went over all that in detail.

Speaker A:

We studied about Shem.

Speaker A:

Go back and listen to those episodes.

Speaker A:

Those are powerful episodes.

Speaker A:

So that's why said we'll have to make him drink some wine.

Speaker A:

Then we'll lie with him, and we can get pregnant, have babies, and that'll preserve the seed for our father.

Speaker A:

That was their purpose.

Speaker A:

It was not a despicable moment.

Speaker A:

It was not, you know, like, illicit thoughts and things like that.

Speaker A:

They're thinking about their family heritage.

Speaker A:

They're thinking about the responsibility that, you know, when Shem was probably talking with everyone, you know, because Shem was a big deal in that family, let's put it like that.

Speaker A:

And now all this stuff is in their minds.

Speaker A:

And now they see the world as they know it wiped out again.

Speaker A:

And they're the only one, as far as they're concerned, they're the only ones left alive.

Speaker A:

Okay, so says that they made their father drink wine that night.

Speaker A:

The firstborn went in, laid with her father, and he didn't even proceed when she laid down, nor when she got up.

Speaker A:

And he was drunk.

Speaker A:

And I can testify, sometimes you do things when you're drunk you don't remember afterwards.

Speaker A:

Okay?

Speaker A:

Came to pass the next day that the firstborn said to the younger, okay, look, I laid yet last night with our father.

Speaker A:

Let's make him drink wine again tonight.

Speaker A:

Then you go in and lie with him.

Speaker A:

That way, when we preserve seed of our.

Speaker A:

Our father, that's the intent here, okay?

Speaker A:

As far as they knew, they were being biblical, okay?

Speaker A:

As far as they knew, this is what we have to do.

Speaker A:

Because God put us in this position where it's up to us to make sure that there's posterity to repopulate the earth.

Speaker A:

So verse 35, they made their father drink wine that night also the younger arose, lay with her, lay.

Speaker A:

Went in to lay with him.

Speaker A:

He perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.

Speaker A:

And why?

Speaker A:

Why one, they had to get him drunk.

Speaker A:

But two, what happened with Noah?

Speaker A:

He was also drinking.

Speaker A:

They knew that story.

Speaker A:

All right, so verse 36.

Speaker A:

Thus were both daughters of Lot with child by the father.

Speaker A:

Both daughters got pregnant.

Speaker A:

Verse 37.

Speaker A:

The firstborn bearer's son, called his name Moab, and the same as the father of the Moabites unto this day.

Speaker A:

The younger, she also bore a son, called his name Benanami, and the same as the father of the children of Amman unto this day.

Speaker A:

Both are thorns on Israel's side to this day.

Speaker A:

All right, but that's not the point of what I'm trying to make here.

Speaker A:

They went in, got pregnant, had boys, okay?

Speaker A:

Now it doesn't say there was any girls involved or anything like that.

Speaker A:

They both had boys, which will come into play later because once they find out, they're not the only ones there, okay?

Speaker A:

Which, you know, that probably wouldn't take long.

Speaker A:

Who knows if it was even that nine month period between this and when they were born.

Speaker A:

You know, we don't know what was taking place.

Speaker A:

We do know that that was the lineage, the bloodline of where they had to go.

Speaker A:

Now, that concludes chapter 19.

Speaker A:

We still have time.

Speaker A:

Let's begin now in chapter 20, verse number one.

Speaker A:

We rewind about nine months now, I guess, okay?

Speaker A:

Because Abraham journeyed from there towards the south country and dwelled between Kadesh and Sure and Sojourn and Gerar.

Speaker A:

And Abraham said of Sarah, his wife, she's my sister.

Speaker A:

And Abimelech, king of Gerar, went in and took Sarah.

Speaker A:

Now let's stop for a second here.

Speaker A:

She's 89 years old, right?

Speaker A:

And she is so hot that this king wants her in his harem.

Speaker A:

Think about that.

Speaker A:

Think about what the anointing does for your youth, right?

Speaker A:

You got God all over you and on the inside of you, permeating out of you the Holy Spirit, the There ain't nothing that's impossible for God.

Speaker A:

Here she is, 89 years old and a king season and say, man, she is hot.

Speaker A:

He's got his choice of all the young women in his kingdom.

Speaker A:

He says, I want her.

Speaker A:

Just throwing it out there, folks.

Speaker A:

Read it yourself.

Speaker A:

All right?

Speaker A:

Verse 3.

Speaker A:

But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night and said, behold, you're a dead man if you do this.

Speaker A:

I love that verse.

Speaker A:

You are a dead man if you do this.

Speaker A:

He said, for the woman, what you've taken, for she is a man's wife, she's married to a husband, but cannot come near her.

Speaker A:

Normally with kings, there's this purification period when you're taking a woman in to be part of your harem.

Speaker A:

And she was probably obviously still in that stage.

Speaker A:

And he said, lord, will you slay a righteous nation?

Speaker A:

He said, we ain't done nothing wrong here, you know, please don't kill us.

Speaker A:

He said, did he not tell me she's my sister?

Speaker A:

She even she herself said, he's my brother.

Speaker A:

They say, in the integrity and the simplicity of my heart and innocence of my hands is why I've done this.

Speaker A:

And God said to him in a dream, yes, I know that you did this in the integrity of your heart, for I also withheld you from sinning against me.

Speaker A:

In other words, the only reason that you didn't go in yet is because I put it in your heart not to do so.

Speaker A:

Okay?

Speaker A:

Therefore, I would not permit you to so much as to touch her.

Speaker A:

Now, therefore, restore the man his wife, for he is a prophet and he shall pray for you and you shall live.

Speaker A:

And if you restore, do not restore her.

Speaker A:

You should also know that you will surely die.

Speaker A:

I mean, there's the deal.

Speaker A:

Either give her back and you'll live.

Speaker A:

If you want to keep her, you die.

Speaker A:

Your choice, you say.

Speaker A:

But not just you.

Speaker A:

You won't be the only one that dies.

Speaker A:

I'll wipe out your whole family.

Speaker A:

I mean, this, you know, in modern day, you know, we'll just say mafia type movies.

Speaker A:

He goes, here's the deal.

Speaker A:

Take it or leave it.

Speaker A:

If you leave it, you die.

Speaker A:

Take the deal, right?

Speaker A:

Therefore, Abimelech rose early in the morning, called all his servants and told these things in their ears.

Speaker A:

And now they're afraid, right?

Speaker A:

Then Abimelech called Abraham and said, what have you done to us?

Speaker A:

What have I.

Speaker A:

What did I do to offend you that you brought on me and on my kingdom this great sin.

Speaker A:

You've done things to me that should not have been done.

Speaker A:

And Abimelech said unto Abram, what did you see that made you want to do such a thing?

Speaker A:

Verse 11.

Speaker A:

And Abraham said, because I thought, surely the fear of God is not in this place, and they're going to kill me for my wife's sake.

Speaker A:

And indeed, yet she is my sister because she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother.

Speaker A:

And she became my wife.

Speaker A:

So he says it was kind of like a half truth here.

Speaker A:

She's the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother.

Speaker A:

Okay, we got.

Speaker A:

We got the same dad, but different moms.

Speaker A:

Okay.

Speaker A:

Verse 13.

Speaker A:

And it came to pass when God caused me to wander from my father's house, that I said to her, this is the kindness which you'll show to me every place where we come.

Speaker A:

Just say of me that he's my brother.

Speaker A:

And verse 14.

Speaker A:

Abimelech took sheep, oxen, men, service, women's servants, and gave them to Abram and restored him Sarah, his wife.

Speaker A:

And Abimelech said, behold, my land is before you, dwell wherever it pleases you.

Speaker A:

And Undesari said, behold, I've given your brother a thousand pieces of silver.

Speaker A:

Behold, he is to you a covering of of the eyes and unto all that are with you and all others.

Speaker A:

And thus she was reproved.

Speaker A:

In other words, she was restored.

Speaker A:

He restored her honor to her and then blessed them.

Speaker A:

Amen.

Speaker A:

And that's where we're going to leave it at for today.

Speaker A:

Praise God.

Speaker A:

I just enjoy this Bible study.

About the Podcast

15 Minute Daily Bible Walk
Verse by Verse Through The Bible
This has been a project I have been contemplating for a long time.

Join me in walking through the Bible on our personal Bible study - one verse at at time. There is no "preaching" here. Just simple scripture reading with brief explanations and examples of what the scripture mean.

I was inspired to do this project based upon the program "Through The Bible" with Dr. Jay Veron McGee (who is passed on to be with the Lord for several years now). When I first started to study the Bible, his radio program helped me immensely. It took Dr. McGee 5 years to do a complete Bible Study.

I do not know how long it will take us. But you can start listening at anytime. My goal is to create a new episode each and every day (365 days per year).

Of course, "sometimes" life will get in the way (for many reasons). But I will pick it right back up where we left off (and try to catch up the days that were missed - to help keep us on track).

As I continue to add more episodes, you can join us at the most recent program or start at the beginning. Each episode is labeled as to the scriptures we are going to discuss.

I am so blessed you are here and I pray you will get a huge blessing as we join together in a "15 Minute Daily Bible Walk!" Amen!

About your host

Profile picture for Robert Thibodeau

Robert Thibodeau

I am a 12 year Army veteran as both enlisted and as a commissioned Cavalry Officer.
I am now a retired law enforcement supervisor...

I had my own business for seven years before I entered law enforcement.

As a cop, I was injured on the job on May 12, 2007 and after several surgeries over a couple of years, forced to retire in 2011.

As I was looking down the road to “what am I going to do next?” I started what is now known as a podcast (I had no clue at the time).

Within six months of starting (what I called) “My online radio program” I was offered an opportunity to be on nationwide AM radio. I learned A LOT in one year of doing that!

I then started the online Christian radio platform "Evangelism Radio" in the fall of 2010. It has had listeners in 160+ nations and all 50 states. We host 50+ Christian broadcasters on a weekly basis. We have been operating 24/7 for almost 14 years now. We have been rated #1 in the world by Shoutcast. com on several occasions in our genre. We recently transferred ownership of Evangelism Radio to another ministry so I could concentrate full time on podcasting, preaching and writing.

In 2018, I started the Kingdom Cross Roads Podcast to conduct interviews with Christian influencers from all walks of life and to play their interviews on the radio station. (The KCR Podcast has its own time slot on Evangelism Radio)!
We now have over 1600 episodes and almost 1100 interviews (in just over 6 years).

Looking out at the future of online Christian media, I noticed there was no viable platforms that catered only to the Christian podcast market.

In 2023, we launched a networking platform called, "FaithCasters" which connects "Great Christian podcasters with Great Christian Guests!" This helps to promote the work you do through podcast interviews! Check it out at https://FaithCaster.org

We recently launched "FaithCaster Academy" which serves as a training hub for ALL of our trainings (podcast training / speaker training / interview training, etc.). Members receive access to ALL of our training programs for one low, monthly membership fee. Members also receive FREE access to ALL of the LIVE trainings I conduct (1 or 2 per month) - while non-members have to pay to access the live trainings.

Between my podcast training program, conducting podcast interviews, appearing on other podcasts as guests, speaking at conferences (in person and virtually) and the podcast networking platform, I guess you could say “I’m all in” when it comes to podcasting and online media!

My total focus is to do all we can to assist you to “Get The Word Out” about your mission, services, products, ministry, books, business, etc.
